Offshore Workshop

Project Description:

Encotec were tasked with EPC work for an offshore container to be located on Chirag-1 platform to replace the existing workshop with the purpose of meeting current safety standards.


The New Workshop was designed, fabricated and tested based on EN 12079 standards for offshore workshop requirements. As per client request the replacement Workshop met the following requirements:

Workshop Dimensions:

  • Length – 6090 mm;
  • Width – 2440 mm;
  • Height – 2900 mm;
  • Design life: 25 years.


  • Structure as per DNV 2.7.1 and EN 12079;
  • Hazardous zone – Zone 1;
  • Electrical as per DNV 2.7.2;
  • Specific requirements.

Workshop shall be designed as:

  • Welding / Fabrication workshop with relevant area for welding and storage of material and equipment;
  • Steel framed container structure, blast proof from blast loads equivalent to 0.25 barg over the projected area;
  • Fully ventilated and pressurised working area;
  • Fully safe for installation on Gas/Oil producing platform in Hazardous Zone 1;
  • Waterproof;
  • Fire rating not less that H60 for all elements.

Workshop is equipped with:

  • Two marine type doors with interlock, water tight and complies with heavy duty and H60 fire rating;
  • HVAC system which maintains normal operation atmosphere during welding activity in summer case;
  • Stand alone F&G system fully integrated with HVAC system and interface with platform F&G system;
  • Page party system with an interface to platform page party system;
  • Compressed air distribution manifold;
  • Retractable runway beam with 1000 kg SWL trolley hoist.
  • Corrosion protected;
  • Electrical equipment (380V AC distribution board, Lighting, On-off switch, Sockets, transformer) certified for Hazardous Zone 1;
  • Fire extinguishers suitable for extinguishing all fire types;
  • First aid Equipment;
  • Equipment and tools required for fabrication activity;

The scope of design work includes:

  • Structural;
  • Electrical;
  • Piping system;
  • HVAC;
  • Fire and gas system;
  • Telecommunications;
  • Preparation of drawings and subsequent certification of design as per EN 12079 by ABS.

The scope of construction includes:

  • Steel structural, piping and electrical material procurement;
  • Procurement of special items (doors, crane beam, electrical transformer, distribution board, etc.);
  • Coordination of design, supply and installation of HVAC system by Sub-contractor;
  • Fabrication of Workshop steel structure;
  • Fabrication and installation of pipework;
  • Installation of all required equipment and machinery;
  • Testing of workshop as per EN-12079;
  • Certification by ABS;
  • Preparing workshop for transport to the platform.
